People sometimes refer to it as the sound of the universe, the unifying sound that unites us all.
However so many people say it but what does it really mean?
It actually has a lot of meaning surrounding it however it is not something that is simple to define. Om is beautiful and we love this Yoga Om Tank with the om inside of the fingertips!
Om is vague and nebulous and can mean almost anything and is based around the rule of threes.
Most faiths are based around trinities including the holy trinity, father, and son, Holy Spirit in Christianity, and in Hinduism this holy trinity is based around three syllables: A, U, and M or phonetically “aah”, “ooh”, and “mmm”.
These syllables can represent a wide variety of trios including the heavens, earth, and the underworld or the Hindu gods Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva (aka creator god, sustainer god, and the destroyer god).
It also is meant to represent our waking, dreaming, and dreamless states to represent all of consciousness.
The Om sound first originated in the sacred Hindu text the Mandukya Upanishad which is a book entirely devoted to Om and states that
“Om is the imperishable word. Om is the universe, and this is the exposition of Om. The past, the present, and the future, all that was, all that is, and all that will be is Om.
Likewise, all else that may exist beyond the bounds of time, that too is om.”
Mantras are extremely important in Buddhism and Om is said to be the mother or “seed” of all mantras.
Seed Mantras are short, strong sounds that correspond to each chakra and help to fuel longer chants.
Om corresponds to your third eye or crown chakra and helps us to connect with our Divine self.
It is the core of some Buddhist systems and other Indian religions.
The shape of the visual symbol for Om embodies all 3 syllables, the three with the mini S on it is “oooh” and the bindi and half moon at the top of the”mmm”.
Some say the symbol is connected to Ganesh, the Hindu half elephant God who removes obstacles because it you look at the Om symbols and squint, you can see his round and curvy form and graceful trunk represented.
Om also is sacred because of how we feel when we chant it.
The sound itself helps to calm us down and ease our central nervous system which can be over stimulated in our go go go type of world we live in.
When you chant “Om” it helps us to focus our mind, even if only for a short period of time.
It helps us to unite as a group, which is why it is used to end a yoga or meditation class.
When we sound the word “Om” together, we help to align our mind, body, and spirit.
It can be helpful to wear clothing or jewelry with the Om symbol because it acts as a reminder to slow down, breathe, and focus on the unifying meaning of the “Om” symbol and what it means.
